About Us

Ashton Art Group was founded in October 1966 and was based for many years at the Guide Hut behind St. Thomas’ Church. The group meets weekly every Thursday night between 8pm and 10pm, at Heath Road Day Centre, Ashton in Makerfield. WN4 9HH

The Group has over 40 registered members. We have a range of abilities within our membership, from beginners to professionals. Our annual subscription (currently £25) becomes due immediately after the AGM which is held in January of each year. We do not charge weekly fees other than a small charge for life models or demonstrations, in order to cover expenses. We also take a 10% commission from any exhibition sales at our annual summer exhibition.

The Group holds a large annual exhibition each summer which is currently held in St. Thomas’ Church Hall on Warrington Road. This exhibition is very popular with the local community and most of the work on display is also offered for sale. The annual exhibition is advertised locally and also in the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s”What’s On” guide. During the exhibition we ask people to vote for their favorite piece of work. The winning artist is given a small prize by fellow members.

The Management committee meets every 2 – 3 months to set the agenda for the forthcoming few weeks. We try to make the programme as varied as possible but ensure we have a life study session every month. We have a club notice board on which we have a members suggestion list for new ideas for the programme. Each member receives a copy of our bulletin/programme which contains items of interest and bits of news which may be of interest to members.

Visitors are always welcome to call in and see us any Thursday night during our club meeting. We do occasionally go outdoor sketching during the lighter months so if unsure, please contact us. There is always a copy of our bulletin on the noticeboard at Ashton Library along with flyers in the leaflet rack.
